Priory Lodge was sponsored by Abbey Lodge No 3341 which was founded in 1909 (which is recorded as being named after St Albans Abbey). In July 1929 it was nearing its coming of age and to commemorate its 21st year it was decided to support the petition for a new Lodge— thus was the start of “The Priory Lodge No 5152”.
With membership exceeding 100, Abbey Lodge supported the formation of a new lodge to provide progression opportunities for younger brethren. Fourteen founders, led by W Bro George A. Isaacs, MP, met at the House of Commons to initiate plans.
A Warrant of Constitution was granted on 6th November 1929. Priory Lodge No. 5152 was consecrated on 18th February 1930 at the Salisbury Hotel, Barnet.
The Lodge met at the historic Salisbury Hotel, a former coaching inn dating back to 1637, known for its traditional character and long-standing association with the Lodge.

"Priory Lodge No. 5152 is proud to be approaching a historic landmark. Founded in 1930, we are currently moving toward our Centenary year in 2030. For nearly a century, our Lodge has been a cornerstone of Freemasonry in Hertfordshire, maintaining a legacy of integrity and service that has passed through generations of Brethren."

Priory Lodge was consecrated on 18th February 1930 at the Salisbury Hotel in Barnet, a historic coaching inn with origins dating back to 1637 under Royal Charter from King James I, later rebuilt in 1811. The Lodge met in rooms upstairs, accessed via the bar, in surroundings that reflected the building’s long history as a stopping point for horse-drawn coaches travelling to and from London. The venue retained a distinctive and traditional character, and members recall a strong sense of camaraderie during this period, with the Lodge remaining there for many decades.

Ashwell House became an important home for Priory Lodge after its purchase in 1935 by Alderman J. C. H. Lewis, a former Mayor of St Albans. Following his death in 1950, the property was acquired by the St Albans Masonic Centre and managed by Ashwell House Ltd. Initially, meetings were held in a smaller hall, before the present Masonic Hall was officially opened in 1967. During the 1970s, the building also operated as a British Restaurant and later a banqueting hall. Members recall the early days fondly, including the gradual conversion of the cellar into a bar, which became a well-used social space despite its humble beginnings.
The number 13 appeared repeatedly during the formation of Priory Lodge. Of the fourteen original founders, thirteen attended the first meeting in June 1929, held in Committee Room 13 at the House of Commons. This pattern continued symbolically, with both the Lodge number (5152) and the year of consecration (1930) adding up to 13. Further coincidence followed, as the Lodge’s first initiate resided at house number 13. While such occurrences might traditionally be viewed as unlucky, they have instead become a distinctive and memorable feature of the Lodge’s early history.
