About Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations. Its origins are believed to lie in the traditional ceremonies of the medieval stonemasons who built many of the world’s amazing cathedrals and castles.

For freemasons today there are four important values that help define their path through life: Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity. Membership is open to any man over the age of 18 irrespective of their race, religion or social status.

Freemasons meet at lodge meetings which are typically held in two parts. The first involves the lodge administration and working practises in a temple, a process made up of three degrees, each marked by a special ceremony. The second is a festive board, where members dine socially together with formal speeches and toasts.

Making friends, contributing to society, celebrating tradition, learning and personal growth are all reasons to join Freemasonry. If you are interested, please contact our provincial office who will be more than happy to help.

Charity

Charity is a cornerstone of Masonic teaching and practice. Freemasons are among the largest charitable contributors in the country, donating millions annually to a myriad of causes. Our members dedicate significant time, resources, and skills to make a tangible difference, embodying the principle of 'Relief' through active community service.

Freemasonry in Hertfordshire

The Masonic Province of Hertfordshire was officially formed when William Forssteen received his patent as Provincial Grand Master on 24 March 1797 (although, at that time, he had no actual Lodges to govern). The first Lodge in Hertfordshire was constituted in 1829 and the Province then slowly grew under the next three Provincial Grand Masters to a total of just eight. At this point, Sir Thomas Frederick Halsey became Provincial Grand Master and, after no less than 50 years in post, he left the Province with a much more fulsome 41 Lodges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@priorylodge5152.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

People join Freemasonry for many different reasons, some join for the friendships they will make; friendships that last a lifetime and encompass the key milestones in life for better or worse. You will meet people who are different to you, those of different ages with radically different life experiences and interests, drawn together by common experience through Freemasonry.

Our members are, and have been for three centuries, drawn from all walks of life. From Captains of industry and chief executives to manual labourers and forklift truck drivers, so you will find people with a wealth of different outlooks from all races, religions, classes and backgrounds.

There are also those who enjoy the ceremonial aspects. Our meetings consist of centuries old lessons centered around you as an individual. How you live your life, the decisions that you make and how to become a better person are all found within our meetings.  As you progress in Freemasonry, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in these ceremonies to varying degrees, although there is no pressure to do so – you might prefer just to sit back and enjoy watching them performed.

Freemasons are taught to look after those less fortunate than themselves, charity is our lifeblood and many members devote their time and energy to helping those less fortunate than themselves.

We also have a huge amount of fun along the way, we eat, drink and meet together forming lifelong friendships.

The United Grand Lodge of England has 180,000 members. The Grand Lodge of Scotland and Ireland also have 10,000 members and the two female grand lodges in England comprise of around 25,000 members. Worldwide there are estimated to be around six million members.

Membership is open to men of good repute, aged 21 or over, who profess a belief in a Supreme Being. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds, races, and cultures who are interested in personal development, fellowship, and contributing positively to society.

Freemasons are required to believe in a supreme being.  However, as a secular organisation, there’s no requirement for this to be a “God” recognised by any particular religion.  Nor is there any requirement for a member to be a practicing member of any faith. Freemasonry itself is most certainly not a religion, and welcomes members of all faiths, creeds and backgrounds.

Not at all. If you think that Freemasonry might be for you, and you’d like to find out more, you can send us your details and one of us will be in touch with you.
